Education changes lives and families and communities

Our committee

The Country Education Foundation of Walgett Committee is a small, dynamic group of volunteers passionate about the education of country kids.

PRUE SINCLAIR (POWELL)

CHAIR
Prue grew up an hour north west of Walgett and knows how hard it can be to leave the black soil plains to seek education and employment. She has close family and friends in the area and loves helping young people realise their life potential – although at times says it can be like nailing jelly to a tree!

ANDREW DUNLOP

TREASURER
Andrew shows his dedication to friendships in the area by travelling to Walgett to play in the past 18 October Tennis tournaments! Raised in Orange and now a Sydney banker, Andrew looks after our finances and reporting but it’s the interaction and mentoring of the young ones where he really shines.

MELISSA OZOUX

WALGETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Melissa is a much loved member of the Walgett community where she not only teaches, but volunteers in every possible way. Melissa attended WCC and has been teaching there for over 20 years so has a deep understanding of the difficulties some young people face furthering their education after school.

DOREEN PETERS

WALGETT TAFE
Doreen is a local Gamilaraay woman, who attended Walgett High School and Macquarie University. She was the first Aboriginal female public servant in NSW and enjoyed a trailblazing 38 year career with NSW Police, culminating with the Police Commissioner’s Award for Dedication to Service.
Doreen is currently the Campus Manager at Walgett TAFE and looks after our interview protocols. You can be sure, we listen!

SARAH DONNELLEY

YOUNG DYNAMO
Sarah is passionate about teaching indigenous students, who is leaving Clovelly for Wilcannia this year. She joined Andrew and Prue on a road trip to Walgett and Lightning Ridge Schools in September and said ‘For me, this trip highlighted the need to support these creative, resilient teens. It also uncovered so many more young people who may access tertiary education, previously unthought of, as a result of CEF Walgett support, and cement the plans of those who have big plans already.’

PENNY FAHEY

LIGHTNING RIDGE CENTRAL SCHOOL
Penny is very involved with her community. Penny identifies motivated young local students and loves connecting them with possibilities, sometimes with a gentle shove in the right direction!

JANE FRIEND

WALGETT CWA
Jane is a local farmer and currently President of the Walgett CWA. She keeps us on track with local wisdom and succinct ideas. Jane often tunes in to meetings from behind a mob of cattle!

JUDY NEWTON

CAFE OWNER
Judy was formerly a Walgett farmer and is now a Dubbo café owner! Being past President ICPA of Australia, Judy offers us very steady guidance behind the scenes with her immense knowledge of the difficulties of rural and remote education.
